Improving English Skills of Prosecutors and Staff of Badung District Prosecutors Through Legal English Training

Abstract

Adequate English language skills are required by prosecutors and staff of the District Attorney’s Office of Badung considering that its jurisdiction includes Kuta, Nusa Dua - tourist destinations that are very much visited and inhabited by foreigners. However, the fact is that English language skills of prosecutors and staff of the District Attorney's Office of Badung are still inadequate to communicate directly with foreigners. In addition to serving foreigners involved in a case, either as witnesses or as perpetrators of criminal acts, the District Attorney's Office of Badung as a state lawyer, is also obliged to provide legal services to foreigners. Forms of services provided include: providing information about the law, providing information on questions submitted by foreigners in connection with the law in Indonesia. In relation to this matters, legal English is required to explain the laws in Indonesia. From the problems mentioned above, the Community Service Team of Warmadewa University offers a solution to partners, namely, Legal English Training for Services. This training was conducted regularly for 6 months for 24 meetings and held once a week every Monday, starting in March 2023 until August 2023. The training was conducted using the face-to-face method. This Community Service activity is expected to, first, increase the courage and confidence as well as the English language skills of the prosecutors and staff of the District Attorney's Office of Badung and second, to improve the legal English skills of the prosecutors and staff. Furthermore, with the capital of confidence and courage as well as adequate legal English skills and capabilities, legal services to foreigners are getting better and improving in terms of quality.
