A Review of Flipped Classroom Model for Promoting Students’ Basic English Skills

Twenty-first-century learning has recently become increasingly known and widely applied during the learning process. Considering the learning situation and conditions during this era, where the learning process is carried out online and face-to-face or this is known as blended learning. The use of technology is important during this learning model. Teachers are required to apply learning methods that are appropriate to the current situation. In this review, the flipped classroom model is one of the appropriate learning models to be applied in blended learning in order to promote students’ English basic skills. The present study adopted George’s model (2008) that was adjusted into a qualitative design by Ariantini et al. (2021). The results show that the flipped classroom model can promote students' English basic skills.

A Sociolinguistic Analysis of Address Terms Used in J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

This research is entitled “A Sociolinguistic Analysis of Address Terms Used in J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix”. This paper aims to analyze the types and the functions of the address terms used in Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. The main theory used are the theory taken from Wardhaugh (2006) and the supporting theory used are the theory taken from Chaika (1982). This research utilized Rowling’s film entitled Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix as the data source. The data collection was done in a form of observing spoken language. In this research, the note-taking technique was employed to write down key points retrieved from the film. The data were analyzed using content analysis to find out about the purposes, messages, and effects of communication content. The result of this research showed that there are seven types of address terms and three functions of address terms found in the film. The seven types of address terms found in the film were first name, last name, title only, title plus last name, special nickname, nickname or pet name, and kinship term. The three functions of address terms found in the film were to show intimacy, to show power differential, and to show respect.

The title of this research is “An Analysis of Slang Words Found in Avril Lavigne Song lyrics”, This Research aims to answer two research problems: (1). What are the types of slang words found in Avril Lavigne song lyrics, (2). What are the meaning of slang words found in Avril Lavigne song lyrics. The data in this research are the lyrics of the songs by Avril Lavigne. In this research used theory from Mattiello (2008) in her book entitled “An Introduction to English Slang” was used to analyze the types of slang words. Theory by Leech’s (1981) was used to analyzing and explain types of slang words that are used in Avril Lavigne song lyrics. The data were song lyrics analysis, the research tried to find and identify the slang word in lyrics by finding, marking, analyzing, and classifying the data according to the types of slang words and types of meaning. Finally, based on the data analysis, it was found that slang can be classified as several types such as compounding, prefixation, conversion, acronym, blending, clipping and variation. Furthermore, there were Five types of meaning found in this research, namely conceptual meaning, collocative meaning, affective meaning, reflective meaning, and social meaning.

Aspectual Demension Of Balinese Modal Verbs: Syntactic and Semantic Analysis

This paper accounts for the Balinese modals. It focuses on their syntactic and semantic representation. Analyzing them by using modal theory proposed by Quirk (1985) and RRG theory proposed by Van Valin (1999) with the data taken from Balinese novels, and applying a descriptive method, it was found out that syntactically, the Balinese modals specify aspectual dimensions and have a wide range of functions. They can also modify adjectives, statives, and adverbs as well as transitive and intransitive verbs. Besides, they can be used independently or as the heads of constructions. Semantically, the Balinese modals can bring various semantic basis according to degree or mode of accomplishment and they appear in high and low registers.

Cohesive Paragraphs Writing Performed by The First Grade Students of Sma Kristen 1 Kupang In Academic Year 2021/2022

This Article is entitled “Cohesive Paragraph Writing performed by the First Grade Students of SMA Kristen 1 Kupang in the Academic Year 2021/2022”. The Aims of this study were to know the level of Ability of Students in Writing Cohesive Paragraph and to find out difficulties faced by Students In SMA Kristen 1 Kupang in Writing Cohesive Paragraphs. Since the students have an equal competence in studying English, thirty-five students have been randomly taken as subjects of this research. Descriptive qualitative method was employed to describe the aims of research. The instrument of this research cohesive were observation and writing task. based on the data analysis it can be concluded that the Ability of student’s level in writing cohesive paragraph grades achievement, from thirty-five students which have writing task, 7 students were excellent which got the 80-90 means and 9 students got 75. The mean of student’s grade achievement got the total grade of correct to these answers 65%, means mostly they were able to use the cohesive paragraph in writing. The test was the writing task that consists of 20 numbers the result shows that more than half of students could do this test it is proved by the percentage of total of students who have done correctly was 67%. The students were able to do this test because they understand and have knowledge of cohesive paragraph.

Eco-cultural Approach through Local Wisdom Identification in Designing Teaching Materials for English Department Students

This is a preliminary study leading to a learning activity design on the basis of local wisdom mapping to contribute to teaching materials for the English department students. Specifically, the materials are intended to develop the Discourse Analysis course. The study aims at identifying local wisdom values that can be included in the topics of discussion when the English departmant students are asked to analyze and write texts containing local terms or local values. To get the local wisdom knowledge, the study is conducted in Demulih village, Susut sub-district, Bangli regency, Bali. The site research is chosen due to its great potential of natural landscape that is believed to have outstanding eco-cultural values that people have to respect. Through a close observation during the field study, the present research is expected to shed some light on the identification of local wisdom with their educational aspects. The focus is on various types of lexicons and expressions that contain local wisdom and meaningful values found as part of local community’s life in the natural landscape of Bukit Demulih (Demulih hill), Bangli regency. The results of this study will be used as the supplement of teaching materials as well as developing learning activities in the Discourse Analysis course of the English department of Universitas Mahasaraswati Denpasar

The city of Denpasar has a physical environment and the citizens must adapt to the development and life of the community. Nature as a basic component in the community life system includes the potential of the area, landscape (topography), and geographical conditions. In terms of regional potential, administratively Denpasar City consists of 4 sub-districts with 43 villages. Kertalangu Cultural Village is a tourist attraction located in the middle of Denpasar city. Offering physical and non-physical tourism objects based on the agrarian cultural traditions of the local community. To support these activities, various facilities are provided in an area of 80 hectares. This information will provide clues about the existence of a place, so that it is easy to find various facilities in the Kertalangu Cultural Village, especially the value of local cultures in the village.

This research is entitled Indonesian English Code Mixing Used In Curhat Bang Denny Sumargo YouTube Channel. This research is focused on analyzing the types and constituent of code mixing taken from Bang Denny Sumargo's YouTube channel. Muysken's theory is used to analyze code mixing, namely three types of Code Mixing where there are three types of Insertion, Alternation, and Congruent Lezicalization. The second theory uses Morley's theory to analyze constituent of code mixing consisting of word, phrase, and clause. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The data from this study consists of utterances taken from each video that uses code mixing. The result of the research shows that there are three types of code mixing produced from utterance.

Jawareh in Sosiolinguistic Study

The purpose of this study is to prove the term Jawareh as code mixing event or as dialect of Javanese and Sundanese languages in Cirebon. Considering that the population of Cirebon consists of Javanese speakers and Sundanese speakers, this mention is specifically addressed to the two speaking communities, not to speaking communities outside Cirebon. It is only found in Cirebon. This research is field research that uses a qualitative approach and a synchronic review. The linguistic elements that were captured were spoken sentences or utterances of the language used by the two groups of speakers in Cirebon. Sources of data in this study are informants. The results of this study found that the term Jawareh attached to the Javanese and Sundanese-speaking communities in Cirebon because in their spoken sentences or utterances it was found that the use of the Javanese lexicon and the Sundanese lexicon were code mixing events. The results of this study also found that Jawareh cannot be classified as a Javanese dialect or a Sundanese dialect in Cirebon. The term Jawareh was allegedly conveyed by Sundanese speakers from outside Cirebon to Javanese speakers and Sundanese speakers in Cirebon as local wisdom and a sense of brotherhood among the residents of West Java.

Structuralism postulated that the complex human experience could be simplified into smaller components. Numerous studies focused on the breakdown of the narrative into its smaller parts and hypothesized that cultural values are embedded in the text's narrative structure. Mindanao epic narratives were less explored than a significant number of Western and Asian narratives. Therefore, the study aimed to contribute to the existing body of knowledge as it extracted Mindanao indigenous people’s cultural values using Vladimir Propp’s Narrative Structural Analysis Theory. First, the study revealed 24 morphological functions present in the epic based on Propp’s morphological functions enumerated in Morphology of the Folktale (1968). Second, the study formulated the narrative structure of the epic based on Propp’s propositions on pair, group, individual, out-of-sequence, double morphological functions; multiple interwoven, sequential villainies, and spheres of action of the dramatis personae. Third, the study presented binary oppositions such as evil-good, conflict-settlement, need- supplication, separation-reunion, and humiliation-recognition which collectively reveal the Mindanao indigenous people’s penultimate quest for achieving peace after conflict. Furthermore, the study revealed several cultural implications on the significant roles of the datu (head of the community/tribe), women, marriage, and kinship in conflict mediation and negotiation.

This study is entitled “Modes And Techniques Of Interpreting Found In The Murder Case Of Sheila Von Wiese-Mack”. This research focused on finding modes and techniques used by the interpreter. The research applied a descriptive qualitative approach. In addition, data are obtained from video recordings when the perpetrators testify in court. Then, that was transcribed and analyzed into a written (English-Indonesian-English) or vice versa. There were four modes of interpreting proposed by Pochhacker (2004:18) namely simultaneous, consecutive, whispering, and sight translation. However, the result showed that there are two modes of interpreting used by the interpreter at trial proceedings namely consecutive and simultaneous interpreting. Furthermore, the interpreter used six techniques during the trial proceedings namely (1) reformulation, (2) cutting, (3) simplification, (4) omission, (5) summarizing and recapitulation, and (6) cutting and summarizing combined technique.

Optimizing Educational Technology To Improve Students’ Listening Comprehension Through Podcast

Learning foreign languages in online classes which is currently applicable raises several challenges that must be faced by teachers and students in the teaching and learning process. Listening comprehension in a foreign language invites perceptions that is considered difficult for some students even though it is known that listening comprehension is the most needed skill in learning a language to understand each other. Having good listening comprehension encourages students to be able to participate in listening activities and at the same time, students can receive information, increase new insight, and respond to statements or questions from the other person. Various learning media are used for learning activities because most daily activities nowadays optimize the use of technology to support learning activities, especially in the implementation of online classes. Technology offers many teaching materials in various forms to support the learning process and also indirectly introduces students to be able to dig deeper into the information that can be obtained through the technology introduced by the teacher. A podcast is the use of technology in a form of audio or video that can improve students' listening comprehension through interesting and informative content. The application of podcasts as a medium to improve students' listening comprehension needs to be investigated. This paper describes some of the findings of researchers who initiated the use of podcasts to improve students' listening comprehension.

This research is entitled “Politeness Maxim Applied by Characters in Victoria & Abdul Movie”. This research aims at finding out the kinds of politeness maxim in Victoria & Abdul movie and its politeness scale. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from the script of Victoria & Abdul movie. Politeness Maxim proposed by Geoffrey Leech (1983) in his book entitled The Pragmatics of Politeness was used in analyzing the data. Based on the results, six kinds of politeness maxims were found in this movie, such as tact maxim, generosity maxim, approbation maxim, modesty maxim, agreement maxim, and sympathy maxim. On the other hand, for the politeness scale found in the movie were cost-benefit scale, authority scale, indirectness scale, optionality scale, and social-distance scale.

Public Signs in Heritage Area of Denpasar: Linguistics Landscape Studies

Linguistics Landscape study has become one of the interesting studies in recent years. This research aims at examining if the language on public signs was applied according to governor regulation No. 80 of 2018 concerning the protection and use of Balinese language, script and literature on public signs in Heritage area of Denpasar, and how it was applied as well as its function(s). This research is field research and used descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from the public signs in the heritage area located in Jalan Gajah Mada, Denpasar, and also from the interview with the owners of the shops along the heritage area (bottom-up) and the administration staff of the government (top-down) in order to find out their functions. Based on the results, it was found that there were 34 signs that did not apply the governor regulation with the percentage of 61,8. Meanwhile there were 21 signs applying the regulation with a rate 38,2%. In addition to the functions, it was found that there were some motives from the authors in applying the language on public signs, they are: (1) language conservation, (2) providing information, (3) commercial purpose (4) and decorative function.

This study concerns with the signifier and signified of verbal and visual signs in COVID-19 advertisements, also concern with denotative and connotative meaning in COVID-19 advertisements. This study has two objectives of the study they are: 1) to find out the signifier and signified of verbal and visual signs presented in COVID-19 advertisements by National Institutes of Health. 2) to analyze the meaning of denotative and connotative meaning in COVID-19 advertisements. The data used in this study were taken from the National of Institutes of Health Websites using the observation method. This study uses a qualitative method to conduct a clear analysis. The theory used in this study is the theory of semiotics by Saussure (1916), theory of meaning by Barthes (1967), and also the supporting theory of the theory of color terms by Cerrato (2012). The analysis was presented by informal method. The result of this study concluded that every advertisements have signifier and signified of verbal and visual signs. Where, the signifier and signified of verbal and visual signs will support each other to convey a meaning or message contained in an advertisement. In this analysis, denotative meaning often appears in verbal signs (word, sentence, or phrase), meanwhile connotative meaning often appears in visual signs (picture and color).

This research is entitled Sign Found In Instagram Account Advertisement of Adhi Jaya Hotel. This thesis aims to analyze the types and meanings of signs in the advertisement of Adhi Jaya Hotel. There are several methods used in writing this thesis, namely data sources, data collection, data analysis, and presenting the results of the analysis. Peirce's theory is used to analyze signs, namely Three Kinds of Signs where there are three types of signs, namely symbols, indexes, and icons. The second theory uses Peirce's theory to analyze meaning using a triadic sign model consisting of object, interpretant and representamen. The results of this study is twenty signs were found in Adhi Jaya Hotel advertisements, including eight icons, four indexes, and eight symbols.These signs have different meanings according to the type and meaning of the sign itself.

Strategies to Translate Idiomatic Expressions in HBO Series Succession

This research is aimed at identifying translation strategies for idiomatic expressions found in the first season of the HBO TV series entitled Succession from English into Indonesian. The main theories used are referred to Baker’s (2018) idiom translation strategies and Fernando’s (1996) classification of types of idioms. This research was conducted by using a descriptive qualitative method, with note-taking as the main data collection method. The findings revealed that the idiom found were classified into pure idiom, semi idiom, and literal idiom. Five translation strategies were applied to translate them. They cover the strategy to translate by paraphrasing, using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form, using an idiom of similar meaning and form, omission of the play on the idiom, and omission of the entire idiom.

Subject and Object Agreement in Dhao: Contact-Induced Change from Hawu and Rote

This paper deals with the language contact situation and its impact to the grammatical features of Dhao, as well as the role of language documentation in a multilingual community, like Ndao. This paper focuses on the agreement system in Dhao, a language spoken by about 3000 speakers on the tiny island of Ndao in East Nusa Tenggara Province. Ndao Island is relatively isolated. People of Ndao tend to abandon the island and move to the neighboring islands, Rote and Timor, for the sake of better education and economy. People of Ndao are multilingual. They speak at least their mother tongue, Dhao, the neighboring languages, such as Rotenese, Uab Meto, Hawu, and, Kupang Malay, as well as Indonesian as the national language. Genetically, Dhao language is Sumba-Hawu subgroup of Austronesian family. However, instead of Hawu, Dhao has intense contact with Rotenese, which is Nuclear Timor subgroup of Austronesian. Language contact as such results in changes of grammatical features from Hawu-like to Rotenese-like grammatical typology. In terms of agreement, Dhao applies two different systems: (1) Hawu-like object-verb agreement, where the final vowel of verbs change according to the semantics and plurality of the objects and (2) Rotenese-like subject-verb agreement where the vowel-initial verbs obligatory require prefixes to agree with the subject in person and number. In order to explore such kind of “mixing typology”, a comprehensive documentation and in detail description of the language play a significant role.

The Choice of Adjectives in Describing Celebrities in Online Fashion Articles: A Gender-Based Study

Issues revolving around gender and language have become an ongoing debate for ages. Numerous researchers have shown their interest on the way men and women differ in using language. These differences, according to Lakoff (1975), include the choice of adjectives. In spite of that, there have not yet been many studies concerning how men and women are associated with certain adjectives. Consequently, this study aims to delve into how male and female celebrities are portrayed using various adjectives in online fashion articles. Descriptive qualitative method was utilized in this study. The data were obtained from six latest fashion articles from GQ and Elle Magazine, which were accessed online. In addition, the data were then analyzed by referring to Lakoff’s theory (1975). The results revealed that the choice of adjectives in describing male celebrities differed from the ones used to depict female celebrities. Neutral adjectives such as “simple”, “excellent”, and “classic” were often addressed to the male celebrities, while in describing the female ones, a wider range of adjectives were chosen, namely “dainty”, “lavish”, and “ostentatious”. This indicates that certain adjectives are somewhat still gender-linked.

The title of this paper is “The Grammatical Errors Made by Students of SMP N 4 Baturiti Tabanan in Applying Simple Present”. This paper aims to discuss the types of errors from assignments about family’s daily activities by students of SMP N 4 Baturiti. The methods applied in this research was mixed method (qualitative and quantitative). The main theory used in this research is the theory proposed by Jack C. Richards in his book entitled Error Analysis: Perspectives on Second Language Acquisition (1974). Besides that, the Supporting theory used in this research is the theory proposed by Heidi Duley in his book entitled Language Two (1982). Data of this research were collected from the students of SMP N 4 Baturiti by giving them writing assignment about family’s daily activity. Based on the results of the analysis, it was found that there were four types of error, namely: omission errors, addition errors, misformation, and misordering. In addition, the highest number of errors found in the assignments is omission error.

The title of this research is "The Illocutionary Act in Fantastic Beast: The Crime of Grindelwald." This research aims to describe the types of illocutionary acts based on Searle's theory and supported by the context of situation based on Halliday Hasan's theory that appears in the movie. A qualitative descriptive approach was applied in this research. The data source of this research was the utterance of Newt Scamander in the movie entitled Fantastic Beast: The Crime of Grindelwald. The data were the illocutionary acts found in Newt Scamander's utterances in dialogues. The method in collecting the data was the observation method. It was done by watching the movie several times and taking notes on the dialogues based on the types of illocutionary acts and also identifying the context of situation that appears in the movie. Based on the research, the five types of illocutionary acts were found in the movie: assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declaration. The context of situation has three features they are field, tenor, and mode. The data relating to the field of the context of situation found in the movie were different and mostly took place in Paris. The tenor of the conversation are Newt, Queenie, Jacob, Bunty, Leta, Theseus, and The Committee of The Ministry of Magic. Regarding the mode, the mode used in the conversation was verbal language and mostly uttered with a casual style.

The title of this research is “The Illocutionary Acts Found in English Webtoon Entitled Seasons of Blossom: Hamin’s Flower”. This research is aimed to describe the types, functions and dominant type of illocutionary acts based on Yule’s theory. Qualitative descriptive approached was applied in this research. The data source of this research was an e-comic on English Webtoon entitled Seasons of Blossom: Hamin’s Flower and the data were collected from the character’s utterances in dialogues. There were also two research instruments, i.e. handphone to access the application and a notebook to write the utterances in dialogues. The methods in collecting the data consist of downloading the application, reading the comic, determining the utterances, then classifying and taking a note to the dialogues based on the types of illocutionary acts, also identifying the functions of each type. The research results were described descriptively and presented using formal and informal methods. The results of the research showed the five types of illocutionary acts found in the Webtoon: declaration type which aims to declare something that change the world, representative type which aims to represent the speaker’s belief, expressive type which aims to express the psychological statements, directive type which aims to instruct the listener, and commissive type which aims to show the speaker’s commitment. Furthermore, the dominant type found in the Webtoon is directive types which consist of suggestions, requests, commands, orders, and questions.

This research aims to find out the translation methods used in translating Green's (2005) novel Looking for Alaska into Mencari Alaska (Ruzini & Wulandari, 2014). The data were collected by reading, marking, and note-taking every sentence or word spoken by the main character in the source and target language. They were classified based on the methods used and calculated to find out what types of translation methods are frequently used in translating novel from English into Indonesian. The analysis was based on the eight types of translation methods by Newmark (1988). The result of the analysis showed that there are eight translation methods used to translate novel from English to Indonesian. They include word-for-word translation, literal translation, faithful translation, semantics translation, adaptation, idiomatic translation, free translation, and communicative translation. Free translation is the most frequently used method, while faithful translation method is the least.

The Roles of Qualified Translators and Interpreters in Realizing Quality Ecotourism

The aims of this study are to find out how importance qualified interpreters and translation in realizing quality ecotourism and the roles of higher education institutions in the effort of realizing quality ecotourism. This study applied descriptive qualitative method by taking data from various sources, such as, notices, signs, banners, websites, news from mass media and social media. For the purpose of analysis, two concept were applied, namely, the concept of ecotourism and translation. Based on the result of analysis it was found that qualified interpreters have major roles in realizing quality ecotourism. They have the role of preservation and sustainable ecotourism development; they are educators for visitors on knowledge of ecotourism objects and destination by informing their clients and providing their clients on certain custom, tradition and culture. And lastly, qualified interpreter increases economic development. On the other hand, qualified translators are important to make tourism-related translation, such as, website, brochures, pamphlet, notices, announcement, and so forth more accurate to guarantee their validity and legitimacy. And finally, higher education can take important roles through their three pillar of higher education programs.

The Use of Technology to Support Children in Bilingual Education

Technology has become integral part of the students’ language learning source. The aim of this article is to review the published articles about the use of technology to support children in bilingual education. Bilingualism is defined as an individual’s participation in at least two (or more) languages, in which one of the languages is English, speaking without reference to the proportion of each language. This study seeks to find out how technology used by children who has become bilingual, Indonesian and English. The most researches have shown that technology plays an important role in helping children become bilingual. Supporting bilingual children requires preparing skills according to the children’s needs. Adult-child interactions had a strong positive relationship with children’s language development. In addition, cooperation between parents and teachers was required to promote bilingual education without losing the mother tongue.
